Marangoni Droplet Bursting
Marangoni droplet bursting occurs when a droplet of alcohol and water (colored with dye) is placed on a layer of oil. The alcohol evaporates at the edge of the droplet, causing a radial gradient in surface tension. The gradient in surface tension produces an outward flow, which breaks up into hundreds of fine droplets. These photographs were taken using a laptop computer screen to light the background.
